Completing Your Study Abroad Application

Departing for a foreign country in order to study your subject of choice is an exciting prospect. However one thing you must do first is complete a study abroad application. You might even have to complete more than one depending on certain circumstances. For example, there are organizations like CIEE, CEA, AIFS and others who require a completed application from students who wish to join their study abroad programs. Sometimes there is an application fee required before your application will be processed. What is required from the application will vary depending on where you are applying.

Your university may also require an application for study abroad. Certain universities have certain opportunities for students who want to take part in foreign study. Your school may or may not offer the program you are looking for. It helps to first speak with an advisor at your college who can tell you more about the available study programs in foreign countries. He or she can also tell you about organizations the school works with for these foreign study programs. And, your advisor can help you if you have questions about the application process.

Another thing you may need to apply for before embarking on study abroad is financial assistance. Many students cannot afford the full cost of a foreign study program, but there are things that can help. There are federal loans for approved programs, alternative sources of funding like private loans, and even scholarships based on certain criteria. Some scholarships are for certain areas of study only. Others apply to certain countries only. Then there are scholarships that are based on financial need, and those based on academic merit. Do some research and find out which scholarship to apply for or if you can apply for more than one to improve your chances.

When working on a study abroad application, you may find there is a mountain of paperwork to wade through. You will of course need to provide your basic personal information, however other information may be required also. You might need to provide educational transcripts, letters of recommendation, and proof that you are able to travel overseas. Also you may need a physical examination and/or vaccinations, plus of course a valid passport. While it's true that all of this can get overwhelming, it is worth it because once you get through it all you are ready to depart on the learning experience of a lifetime.
